The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) wishes to fill the following positions:
1. Geoinformation Systems Technician
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Implementing project activities, including data acquisition, digitisation of maps, creation and development of spatial database, and field work and ground truthing.
• Conducting GIS training including preparing training materials.
• Participating in research activities.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• BSc degree in Geomatics, Physical Geography, Environmental Science or related fields.
• At least 5 years of experience in Geoinformation applications.
• Must have sound knowledge of ARCGIS9.3, Geoportal Tool Kits, database software, scripting languages, ERDAS.
• Should have good skills in cartography and map designing.
• Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills in English is crucial.
2. Remote Sensing Technician
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Implementing project activities, including search, identification and acquisition of satellite data, image quality analysis and enhancement, image processing and interpretation and extraction of thematic information and conversion of thematic vector data to raster data.
• Conducting Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry training including preparation of training materials and offer GIS courses.
• Participating in research activities.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• BSc degree in Geomatics, Physical Geography, Environmental Science or related fields.
• At least 5 years of experience in Geoinformation applications.
• Must have good knowledge of image processing software such as ERDAS, EDRISI, ENVI, GEOVIS, Globe Mapper and ESRI Softwares.
• Should have good skills in image transformation and multi-sensor image analysis.
• Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills in English is crucial.

The open source Ushahidi platform launched Crowdmap, going in the cloud with no installation required for their crowdsourced map content. On the ESRI front, for the Python users, the ArcPy.Mapping Module in ArcGIS 10 has been introduced. There’s also a new ArcGIS Diagrammer for ArcGIS 10 released and the Presentation AddIn for ArcGIS Desktop 10. Both Spatially Adjusted and APB mentioned the ESRI U.S. Data.gov Geo Viewer and so far it’s sadly not a success. In the miscellaneous category, O’Reilly links to Meridian, and iPhone app for in-building location. The same source discusses the new major release of Waze, the free turn-by-turn navigation app that added a new social component.
